Zentangle Card

I do enjoy learning new techniques and mediums and I enjoy mixing them. Today, I'm going to show you how I used a zentangle design as a background on a sympathy card. I'll also show you some of the steps in making the card.

 Materials needed:
Drawing paper
Black markers, fine point
Black card stock 4 1/4 x 5 1/2"
White card stock 4 x 5 1/4"
White satin ribbon
Teeny Tiny Wishes stamp set
Word Window punch
Black ink

Complete your zentangle design on drawing paper that measures about 3 x 4" in size. Adhere the zentangle design on the white card stock. Layer that on the black card stock. Wrap a ribbon around the card front and tie in a bow. Stamp a greeting on white card stock. Punch out with the Word Window punch and adhere to the top right of the card.

1. To make this zentangle design and others like it, I like to start with a basic design. For this one, I started with a hand drawn butterfly. You can hand draw your basic design or find a stamp that you like to use for the design.

2. Add more lines to give you areas that you will be able to fill in with design.

Here, I doubled the outside line and added a division on the wings. You can add any lines that you like to do this. You just need to be sure you have areas to fill in.
3. Create a design to fill in the area. Blocks and triangles are easy to do. Geometical designs work well.
4. After you have drawn a design on a section, color every other block. Most of these that I've seen use black and white but I have seen some using colors.
Complete this pattern.
5. Go on to the next section that you want to do. Doing a variety of patterns and designs makes your project more interesting. On this next section, I did triangles. I totally messed up this part so I covered it up and went to the other side to demostrate this.

Draw straight lines across the area. Don't worry about using a ruler since these do not have to be perfectly straight. After you have the straight lines, then draw triangles on each line.

When you have finished the triangles, fill them in with more straight lines on every other triangle.

You can then fill in the empty triangles with black or leave them white.
Other patterns you can do are to create curved lines following the shape of the butterfly. Then color in every other section with black or another color.
Another pattern could be to create a line grid in a section. Then make large black dots at each intersection of squares.
Look around on the internet for different patterns you might like to use. You can also pull patterns from the world around you. You might see a pattern that you like in a garden or in a building. This is your art work, so it's totally up to you as to what patterned you want to use. The main thing, from what I understand, is to create patterns with alternating colors and designs. You can then add your zentangle to a card, scrapbook page, or frame it and place it on your desk.

Just have fun creating!

Silhouettes & Watercolors

 Materials needed:
Serene Silhouettes stamp set (#127324)
Teeny Tiny Wishes stamp set (#128748)
Old Olive card stock 4 1/4 x 5 1/2"
White card stock or watercolor paper 2 1/2 x 4 3/4"
Gumball Green card stock
Always Artichoke ink
Green Galore ink
Daffodil Delight ink
Ballet Blue ink
Subtles Brads (#119738)
Modern Label punch (#119849)
Word Window punch (#119857)
3/16" Corner punch (#119871)
Aqua Painter (#103957)

1. Cut your white card stock or watercolor paper and round the corners. Pick up a small amount of blue ink with the Aqua Painter and brush it across the top 1/3 of the paper. Do the same with the yellow across the middle and the green across the bottom. Two of  the colors I used are retired colors but still work just as well. Lay this aside to dry.
2. Stamp the image from Serene Silhouettes with Always Artichoke ink to cover the Old Olive card stock for a background.
3. When the white card stock or watercolor paper is dry, stamp the same image from Serene Silhouettes over the top of the watercolor splotches in Always Artichoke. Adhere this to the left side of the background card stock.
4. Punch a Modern Label out of Gumball Green card stock. Stamp a greeting from Teeny Tiny Wishes on white card stock. Punch it out with the Word Window punch. Adhere it on top of the Modern Label punch.
5. Place this at the top right of the card front, overlapping the colored image a bit. Punch holes on both side of the greeting label. Add brads and bend to the back.
As always, we will adhere this to our card base.

Just for You card

I had been wanting to do something like this for a little while, so I finally just did it. I really like the watercolor look and I tried several different ways. I was not successful trying to use my watercolor crayons for this so after I did the background, I just did the image with my markers. I'll keep trying with my watercolor crayons & see if I can improve.

Materials needed:
Just Believe stamp set (#120453)
Aqua painter (#102954) or watercolor brush and water
Wild Wasabi card stock 4 1/4 x 5 1/2" plus a small piece of scrap
White card stock 4 x 5 1/4" plus extra
Everyday Enchantment Organdy ribbon Lucky Limeade (#126060, retired)
Modern Label punch (#119857)
Word Window punch (#119857)
Markers or ink pads:
  Canjun Craze marker
  Old Olive marker
  Wild Wasabi marker
  Always Artichoke marker
  Marina Mist, either
Stampin' Dimenionals (#104430)

1. Do the watercolor background on white card stock first. Give it a few minutes to dry.
To do this, you can either mash an ink pad against the lid/top to put ink on the inside of the top(this works really well with the newer raised pads)

or rub a marker on to the plastic top or another plastic surface.

Then use the aqua painter brush or a wet watercolor brush to swish a bit of water onto the ink.

Pick ink up with the brush and smear or swish it onto the white cardstock.

I did the top with Marina Mist, the middle with always Artichoke and the bottom with Wild Wasabi.
It's not necessary to totally cover the card stock with the color. You can also let the 2 shades of green to blend together on the card stock. You can also do this on watercolor paper, if you prefer.
2. Rub the image from the Just Believe stamp set with the markers. I used Canjun Craze for the flower portions, Always Artichoke for the stems and grasses and Old Olive for the leaves. After the stamp is colored, huff on it to reactivate the ink, then stamp on white card stock.
3. Cut out the image around the outsides of the colored leaves and flowers. Place Stampin' Dimensionals on the back of the cut out image. Adhere it to the left side of the painted card stock.
4. I wanted a delicate looking ribbon and I still had some of this organdy left from a couple years ago. Tie a bow in the ribbon. Then cut the length to cover the card, about 10".  Adhere the ribbon on the right side of the card front with adhesive or glue dots.
5. Stamp the greeting from the Just Believe stamp set on white card stock. Punch it out with the Word Window punch. Punch the Modern Label punch out of Wild Wasabi card stock. Adhere the white onto the Wild Wasabi. Adhere both on the top right of the card front, overlapping the ribbon.
6. Adhere the white card stock on to the Wild Wasibi card stock and have the edges showing around it. Adhere the whole card front onto a card base and add your message to the inside.

***Just a tip: You always want to buy items that you can get lots of use out of. I have found the one stamp set that I use over and over again is the Teeny Tiny Wishes (#128748) and the Word Window punch and the Modern Label punch. Every one of the greetings in the Teeny Tiny Wishes set will fit in the Word Window punch, as well as, greetings in many other sets. The Modern Label punch just adds a nice touch to help the greeting stand out.

Add to your stencil card

Today, I made another multi media card using the acrylic paint with the stencil that I did on Friday. I used Night of Navy card stock for this one with the tree stencil providing a background.
Materials needed:
Acrylic paint
stencil
stipple brush
First Edition patterned paper (#121878) 2 1/4 x 2 3/4"
Gumball Green card stock
White card stock
Gumball Green ink
Candy Dots, Regals (#130932)
Word Window punch (#119857)
Modern Label punch (#119849)
Teeny Tiny Wishes stamp set (#128748)

1. Prepare the card stock with the background design like we did on Friday. Click here to see that. Let it dry.
2. Adhere the patterned paper to the left side of the card stock about 1 inch from the bottom.
3. Stamp the greeting from Teeny Tiny Wishes on white card stock in Gumball Green ink. Punch this out with the Word Window punch.
4. Punch out a Modern Label punch from Gumball Green card stock. Adhere the white greeting on top of the green modern label. Adhere this to the patterned paper centered near the bottom.
5. Add 2 Candy Dots to give the look of brads to the label.
Adhere the card front to a card base and add your message to the inside.
There are many more ways to dress up this background card stock. Use your imagine and dig into your scrapping and card stash. You can come up with all sorts of things.

Waxed paper technique

This makes a fun background look on your regular white cardstock. You can use any colors that you want to try together to come up with some fun looks. Different shades of greens can give you a nice garden look while yellows, oranges & browns can make your paper look like suede. Thanks to my friend Gail Goodman for directing me to this cool technique.

1. Take a piece of waxed paper slightly larger than the cardstock you are working with. Crumble it up into a small ball; then smooth it back out.

2. Place this waxed paper between 2 sheets of cardstock. I used cardstock 4 ¼” x 5 ½” to use as my card background.

3. Place a clean sheet of plain paper on your surface to protect it. Lay your cardstock sandwich on top of it.

4. Run a hot iron over the top of piece of cardstock for about 15-20 seconds to give the waxed paper time to melt. Throw away the waxed paper. You now have to cards to do this technique with.

5. Place one of the pieces of cardstock on top of a piece of scrap paper to protect your work surface.

6. Choose 2 shades of the same color ink, one light and one darker. Exp. Certainly Celery and Old Olive Rub the light colored ink directly on the cardstock and rub ink all over the cardstock with the waxed paper. Give the ink about a minute to dry. Do the same with the dark ink. (Be sure to use the light color first or you will have a mess with your ink pad.) The dark ink does not have to totally cover the lighter ink. You will want to leave some of the light ink showing in spots.

7. Use a dry paper towel to wipe the wax off of the card to make your texture really show.

Try this technique with just one color or with 3 colors to see the effect that you get.

It makes a fun background for a garden, wild animals, leather look, etc depending on the colors that you use.

Come back Monday to see a card made using this technique for the background.
